David hocadan ders aldığım için kendimi çok şanslı hissediyorum. Her dersinden kendimi enerjik hissederek çıkardım, yüzü hep gülerdi. Bana katkıları çok. Huzur içinde, bol indentationlu yatsın...

Galiba bilkent hayatımda tanıdığım en güler yüzlü insandı. Hep neşeli ve güler yüzlü oluşu öğrencilerini de ister istemez neşeli olmaya itiyordu. Zor dönemlerde öğrencilerinin yanında oluşu, bir şeyler anlatmak için elinden geleni yapması; onu nadir bulunan bir insan ve öğretmen yapıyordu. Aramızdan bu kadar erken ayrılmanız içimde bir burukluk bıraktı. Huzur içinde uyuyun hocam. Sizinle tanıştığıma ve öğrenciniz olduğuma çok mutluyum.

One of the best instructors that I had the honor to learn from. His light-heartedness and his unique way of teaching will always be engraved in my mind. Thank you for solidifying my first steps of university. Hope you'll rest in peace and you will definitely be missed.

Sempatisiyle, güleryüzlülüğüyle, esprileriyle, enerjisiyle, ve en önemlisi, öğretme aşkıyla kalbimizde kalıcı bir yeri vardı. En az iki nesli elinden geçirmiş, bugünlere hazırlamış birinin hakkı nasıl ödenebilir bilmiyorum. Ancak şunu biliyorum ki, CS101/102 babasını, Bilkent ise bir demirbaşını kaybetti. Başımız sağ olsun.

Sadece bir dönem dersini almış olsam da David Hoca gördüğüm kadarıyla öğrencilerine karşı çok iyi davranan, öğretmeyi seven, nazik bir hocaydı. Cs bölümü için verdiği 35 yıllık emek ve katkılarıyla kendisi hem bu bölümün ve hem de okulun efsaneleri arasında yerini alacaktır. Keşke kendisiyle yüz yüze de tanışıp, sadece online olarak değil dersliklerde de dersini dinleme şansı bulsaydım.
Ailesine başsağlığı diliyorum. Huzur içinde uyuyun hocam.

I just want to say thank you. David was the most important factor that helps to me like coding and this department. He taught me how to learn, not how to get high grades or pass the course. Thanks to this, I’m enjoying it when I’m coding and learning something new for me. And I think, because of all of this, I’m very happy to choose computer science. I can not describe how important this is. My life will pass with these things and I will be doing what I loved. And hocam, thanks to you, thanks to your instructions and guidance, you have made me love what I would do for the rest of my life. And I'm just a student whose life he touched. There are thousands like me. David was the god-giving opportunity for starting to learn coding for me and all other cs students.
I will miss you in Bilkent, we will miss you.

Bilgisayar mühendisliğindeki ilk hocalarımdandı. Hem öğrencisi hem de cs101 dersinde asistanlığını yapmış olma şansına eriştiğim için çok şanslıyım. Programlama hayatımıza ilk başladığımızda bizlere comment yazma alışkanlığı kazandırabilme uğraşının ne demek olduğunu iş hayatında çok güzel deneyimledim. Huzur içinde uyuyun hocam.

Professor David Davenport, my first CS instructor and my advisor who kept me motivated through my first year and a big reason for what I have achieved. A very humble and generous person with an unforgettable smile. Prof. David was not just an instructor to me; he was also a friend. We had lots of talks about everything, not just CS. We owe you a lot and we will never forget you.

Kendi hazırladığı CS101/102 slaytlarında yazdığı kodlar için ne zaman variable ismi gerekse çok sevdiği belli olan kızı ve eşinin isimlerini koyardı. O sunumların önemini o zamanlar tam kavrayamasam da şimdi bir 2. sınıf öğrencisi olarak bize bir bakış açısı kazandırmak için nasıl bir emek harcadığını görebiliyorum. Birlikte arabanın lastiğini mi değiştirmedik, alışveriş sepetini mi boşaltmadık, baktığım her slaytta David'in "empty the shopping cart", "the idea is" kalıbı, bazen tahtada bir şey anlattıktan sonra ağzında hızlıca bir şeyler gevelemesi beynimde yankılanıyor.

Okulda aldığımız notlara takılmamamız gerektiğini, önemli olmanın öğrenmek olduğunu her fırsatta vurgulardı. Gerçekten de mükemmel bir öğretmendi, verdiği örnekler ile konunun mantığını beynimize ince ince işlerdi.

Cemal Süreya'nın deyişiyle "Her ölüm erken ölümdür". Ama David hocamın vefatı gerçekten çok erken oldu, mezun olduktan sonra yanına gidip her şey için teşekkür etme, onunla sohbet etme hayallerim suya düştü.

Kaybettiğim yakınlarım oldu, ama ilk defa bir yakınımın ölümüne ağladım. Kaç yaşında olduğunu bir türlü öğrenememiştim kendisinden, keşke hiç öğrenmeseydim. David 66 yaşında, çok genç bir yaşta aramızdan ayrıldı. Ama yetiştirdiği binlerce öğrenci, mühendis ve akademisyenin kalbinde yaşayacak.

Başta Derya ve Güneş'in, sonrasında hepimizin başı sağolsun. Bilkent'teki ilk öğretmenim, huzur içinde uyu.

Her ne kadar sadece 1 dönem geçirebilsek de hayattaki en önemli derslerden birini öğrettiğin için minnettarım David. Huzur içinde yat.

Yıllarca oğrencilerinin ellerinden tutarak, hayallerine doğru ilk adımlarını atmasını sağladı. Her dersinde güler yüzlü bir şekilde o çok sevdiği işini yaptı, hiçbir zaman gülmemek ve öğrencilerine yardım etmemek için bahane bulmadı. Çok içten, düşünceli, sevgi dolu bir öğretmen ve insandı.
Ben de bu ögrencilerden birisi olduğum için kendimi çok şanslı hissediyorum. İyi ki sizin gibi iyi kalpli bir insanla tanışmışım. Aramızdan bu kadar erken ayrıldığınız için çok üzgünüm, sizi her zaman gülerken hatırlayacağım. Huzur içinde uyuyun hocam.

Bize kattığınız her şey için teşekkürler. Her zaman gülümserdiniz ve ben sizi hep o haliniz ile hatırlayacağım. Huzur içinde uyuyun David Hocam.

The man was, by far, one of the best instructors in the department. He always taught his classes with great enthusiasm, and they were one of the few courses where I could get A grades while having fun listening to his lectures.

He taught so so many people how to think along the lines they would need for good programming, and he did so while being a constant friendly face.

I regret that we will never be able to just sit down and chat for a few minutes between classes anymore. But I will remember those moments always.
The CS field lost a great academician, and will never be the same. May he rest in peace.

Most people would rightly remember David as a great teacher. I remember him as a computing professional who is deeply concerned about social issues related to information and communication technologies. It was the heydays of P2P networking. File sharing services like Napster were shaking up the music industry. So it must be around the year 2000. David gave a seminar at METU. He proposed a scheme for compensating the musicians. His solution would never be implemented because it depended on the generosity of consumers. David apparently thought that others were as benevolent as himself. World would be a much better place if it had more people like David. Toprağı bol olsun.

Bilgisayar mühendisliğine girişte ilk adımlarımızı atmamıza yardım eden disiplinli, özverili, düzenli David Hocam tatlı-sert mizacınla ve gülümsemelerinle aklımızdan hiç silinmeyeceksin.

May he rest in peace...

David was one my first few instructors in Bilkent and one who introduced us all to coding. He would always motivate us and push us to become better versions of ourselves - which is an essential skill to learn, especially for a first year student. He was one of those instructors who genuinely cared about his students and not simply the subject. He was truly one of the nicest, kindest people I had met. This is an extremely sad news. My deepest condolences to his family and loved ones. He will be missed. May his soul rest in peace.
