David Davenport

Professor Davenport was the first teacher of many CS students in Bilkent. As we moved on with courses and graduated we did not realize back then what an impact David hoca had on us as our first programming teacher. Gone so soon, he will always be missed by all of his students who are now around the world doing great things!

I took the CS101 and CS102 courses from him when I was an EE student. I really enjoyed his lectures and that convinced me to change my major to CS. He was a great teacher. His insistance on good practices made those unforgettable, which is very helpful. I felt really sorry when I heard that he passed away. May he rest in peace.

He said "Programming is easy, everyone can do it. Engineering software is not..." in our first class.
Forgetting him is impossible, nobody can ever do it.

David’in ani kaybı hepimizi çok üzdü. Kendisi çok sevilen, insan canlısı ve sevecen bir kişi idi. Bilkent camiasında yeri hiç bir zaman dolmayacaktır. Başta değerli eşi Güneş Hoca ve sevgili kızı Derya olmaz üzere tüm sevenlerine ve Bilkent camiasına sonuz sabır ve başsağlığı diliyoruz. Işıklarda uyusun.

David Davenport taught me the fundamentals of computer science. I have learned the core principles which i built all my career on top from him. I always will remember him and I am very glad that i had the honor to be his student. Rest in peace.

Hoşçakalın Hocam, yazılım nedir, programlama dili de ne demektir.Ben sizinle öğrendim 2005'te öğrencinizdim. Sizi de roboyu da çok sevdim. İyi bir akademisyen, iyi bir eş, iyi bir babaydınız ve bize hepsinin iyi bir insan olmak demek olduğunu hissettirdiniz. Naif bir insan olmanın, nazik ve iyi kapli olmanın en güzel örneklerinden biriydiniz. Işıklar , huzurlar içinde uyuyun... Sonsuz saygılarımla,

1. sınıfta verdiği dersleri ile okula yeni gelen bizleri karşılayan sevecen mi sevecen hocaydı. Daimi güleryüzlülüğü ile bizlerin sonsuz sevgisini kazandı. Aldığımız notlardan çok ne öğrendiğimizle ve nasıl bir birey olduğumuzla ilgilenirdi. Bölüm öğrencileri olarak kendisine çok şey borçluyuz. Huzur içinde uyusun, mekanı cennet olsun.

David hocayi her zaman güleryüzü ve pozitif bir etki yaratan enerjik görüntüsü ile hatirlayacagim. Onun kaybi hepimiz icin sok oldu. Nur icinde uyusun. Ailesine sabirlar diliyorum. Hepimizin basi sağ olsun.

David was my cousin. I find it very moving to hear how he impacted so many lives as a fellow academic. I always admired how he followed his heart both professionally and personally and built a life many hundreds of miles from home. That takes real courage. My thoughts go out to his dear wife and daughter. Thanks you everyone for the kind comments about David.

I met David shortly after I came to Bilkent as the Graduate School of Education was starting. David dropped into our offices to welcome another Brit and to chat. He had many helpful things to tell us and we valued his friendship.
It was always a pleasure to meet him on campus, to stop and talk for a while. He will be greatly missed.

Üniversitenin ilk günlerinden itibaren sıcak sohbeti, güleryüzlülüğü ile dersini sevdiren, sevdirerek öğreten birisi oldunuz. Sadece derslerden bahsetmek haksızlık olur: Ders dışı muhabbetlerimiz, tavsiyeleriniz, iz bırakan kişiliğiniz... Hepsi benim için unutamayacağım deneyimler oldu. Yaklaşık 4 ay geçirebildik sizinle, gönül isterdi ki asla sonu gelmesin. Çok değerli, güzel şeyler kattınız bana hocam; biliyorum ki her biri hayatımı bir şekilde etkileyecek, güzelleştirecek. Her şey ve daha fazlası için teşekkür ederim David Hocam. Huzur içinde uyuyun.

David tought me the very fundamentals and the mindset to be a programmer. He was passionate about coding and showed me how "fun" it was. He was the type of man which continues to live in the minds of the others

I don't remember his exact words, but he used to define an engineer as "a lazy person who makes machines solve his/her problems." One of many programming and life lessons he taught his thousands of freshmen students over the years with an always-present, sincere smile. The kind of smile that immediately tells you that he his one of the kindest human beings you will ever meet. My deepest condolences to his family, friends, and the Bilkent family for his early and unexpected departure. Rest in peace, David. The world is already missing you.

Üniversite hayatımda tanıdığım ilk öğretmenlerden biri David Hoca. Çok kısa bir süre ondan öğrenme fırsatım oldu, iyi ki de olmuş. Güleryüzlülüğü ve bilgeliğiyle eminim bütün öğrencilerine ilham olmuştur. Ailesinin ve tüm sevenlerinin başı sağ olsun. Mekanı cennet olsun.

Belkide son günlerini ailesinden çok bizim ile geçirdiniz hocam. Sizin çok kaliteli bir insan olduğunuzu bilmek için 4 aylık kısa bir ders serüveni yetti ve arttı bile. Birebir görüşmemizde bana dediğiniz " bu hayat amacınız dışında şeylerle ilgilenmek için çok kısa" söyleminizi unutmayacağım. Hayatıma dokunan nadir kişilerdendiniz. Ailesine ve tüm sevdiklerine baş sağlığı diliyorum. Mekanınız cennet olsun.

Dr. Davenport was a very kind gentleman and a great teacher who always maintained a marvellous attitude towards all students. As most CS graduates might do, I still recall myself as a freshman working on ROBO at the lab. To me, it was really inspiring to have a professor who authored instructional modules for teaching. He will be always remembered with his kindness and great personality. Condolences to his dear family, colleagues, friends, and all students.

Halen aldigim haberin sokundayim. O guler yuzunuzu ve kendinize has ders anlatiminizi hic unutmayacagim. Bir keresinde basit bir teknik problem icin sizin ofisinize gelmistim ve yardimci olmak icin baya zaman ayirmistiniz. Bir ogretim uyesinin mesele basit de olsa bu kadar ilgili ve yardimaever olmasi beni cok sasirtmisti. Cogumuz programlamaya sizinle basladik, uzerimizde emeginiz cok gercekten. Mekaniniz cennet olsun. Sizi hic unutmayacagiz.
