Dear Members of the Department of Archaeology and Bilkent University, and the People Who Know Mr. Bennett,
I am heartbroken by the passing of Professor Julian Bennett. He was not just a remarkable scholar but the very soul of our department—the color, the cheer, and the unwavering energy that made our academic world brighter. His passion for Ancient Rome and weaponry was contagious, but it was his way of sharing knowledge that made him truly exceptional. He never settled for the ordinary; he pushed us to think beyond the expected, to question, to explore, and to never confine ourselves to just PowerPoints.
For me, he was more than a professor—he was a mentor, a guide, and a source of reassurance when I needed it most. Thanks to his wise advice and unwavering belief in me, I pursued—and continue to pursue—my career in archaeology. I can say, without hesitation, that I am who I am because of him and his mentorship. He was there during my lowest moments, offering not just academic guidance but personal support, reminding me of my potential when I doubted myself the most. I cannot thank him enough for that, and I will never be able to fully express my gratitude.
Beyond the classroom, he was the best companion on field trips, always making time for students despite his busy schedule. His presence turned every trip into a learning experience that was as engaging as it was insightful. And, of course, there was his humor—his clever, on-point jokes, his legendary t-shirts, and his unmistakable sense of style. You could recognize him a mile away, and his laughter filled the halls, bringing warmth even on the toughest days. No matter what you were going through, he had a way of making you smile, even laugh out loud.
In academia, humility like his is rare. He never sought to elevate himself but instead uplifted those around him. He saw things others overlooked, thought in ways others hadn’t, and shared insights that stayed with you long after the conversation ended. His absence leaves a void that cannot be filled, but his wisdom, kindness, and laughter will live on in all of us.
Losing him is heartbreaking, but I take comfort in knowing that his influence extends far beyond the walls of our department. He shaped lives, careers, and futures—including mine. I will always carry his lessons with me, and I am endlessly grateful to have had him as a mentor and a friend.
With deepest condolences,
Your Lucky-to-be a Student,
Merve Günal
