Norman Stone

Profesör Norman Stone hakkında söylenecek çok şey olmasına karşılık, burada yerimiz sınırlı. Onun için pek bilinmeyen bir noktaya değinmekle iktifa edeceğim.

2001 Yılında Norman’a sormuştum: “Bilkent’te Felsefe Bölümü açmak için dünyada önde gelen bir hocayı getirmek istiyoruz. Kimi önerirsin? “
Norman’ın cevabı şu oldu: “Bernard Williams’ı öneririm. Düşünceleri benimkilerden farklıdır, ama onu takdir ederim ve benim üniversitemde (yani Bilkent’te) olması çok iyi olur “.

Prof. Williams’ı Bilkent’e davet ettik. Gelince de büyük teklifimizi yaptık. “Şu anda kabul etmem mümkün değil, çünkü halen hem Oxford, hem de Berkeley’de görevliyim” dedi. Biz tabii pes etmedik. Süreci zamana yayarak peşinden koşmaya karar verdik. Ancak 2003 yazında Bernard Williams kalp sektesinden vefat edince, yapacak birşey kalmadı.

Norman Stone keskin muhafazakar görüşleri ve Margaret Thatcher’e yakınlığı ile bilinir. Tavsiye ettiği Bernard Williams da keskin görüşlü idi, … ama karşı taraftan: siyasi düşünceleri İngilterenin sol kesimi ve İşçi Partisine yakındı. Farklılıklara olan saygısını somut bir şekilde sergileyen Norman Stone’u o olaydan sonra daha da fazla takdir etmeye başlamıştım.

Prof. Stone’nun hatırası önünde saygıyla eğiliyorum.

I am very very sad to hear Professor Normon's departure from life. It was a privilege for me to meet with him and attend to his courses when I was a BA student at International Relations.
I always thought it as a misfortune not to be able to take some more courses of his and make more benefit of his knowledge and expertise.
He was a great lecturer, critic, specialist on political science and history. And his door was open to the students and researchers for all the time as part of his modesty.
I wish condolences to his family, department colleagues, students and friends past and present.

We are very sad!

I send my sincere condolences to Norman’s family. As two Brits at Bilkent, we talked about whatever was the current crisis in the United Kingdom when we met. He will be missed by his students and the university.

I am deeply saddened to have lost Prof. Norman Stone. R.I.P

We have lost a friend of Turkey and the Turks. We will miss his erudition, his strong and vivid pen. RIP great man!

Norman Stone had made my Bilkent years more colorful and more meaningful. He was one of the best teachers I've ever known. I feel so privileged to have known him and to have been his student. I will miss him dearly.
Rest in peace Norman Stone, a great historian and a wonderful teacher.

A great professor, one of the historians who shaped my historical and political understanding. I had the honor to attend his courses and intelligent discussions. Requiescat in Pace N. Stone.
