Professor Doktor Ihsan Dogramaci's legacy makes him immortal. He was a Gargantuan humanitarian, deeply interested in diverse topics. His great competence in language and cognitive sciences, diplomatic and management skills, music appreciation, culinary interests complement his public accomplishments in medicine and in education. Some version of
service, help, contribution, sense of duty was on his mind--so much so, perhaps, that he did not waste much time sleeping. A devoted family man, his daring innovations found support in the infinite confidence his ever-beautiful wife Ayser Hanimefendi had in him. His caring personality, buttressed by an awareness of his potential, is reflected in his resourcefulness in establishing educational programs and institutions. An idealist/realist, he worked through what was available to create a progressive system that would meet the needs of changing times. (The projected Museum to be established at the Residence will provide thought-provoking presentations that testify to his global embrace.)
My late husband Stanford J. Shaw and I were proud to have the opportunity and the honor to get to know him. He was not humble, but had humility that made him accessible to Everyman. Perhaps it was the quality-time that he spent with his own children that imparted to them a similar sense of duty, devotion, and sense of destiny: to be a torch-bearer. I will miss the sparkle in his eyes and the benevolent (perhaps mischievous/muzip) smile, but he is still with us through memories of him and the continuing achievement of generations of students from Bilkent University as well as Hacettepe.
I offer my deep condolences to his family, and to his extended Bilkent family, and to humanity.
